I've handled parts purchasing for a 12-bay restoration and performance shop for eight years. The muffler that started it
The muffler was a 2 inch Magnaflow muffler. The listing said 'fits 2 inch exhaust.' Reviews said 'sounds great' and 'great build quality.' At 11 a.m. on a Wednesday, that was all I needed. I hit buy and moved on.
What I skipped was the part of the product page that shows whether the inlet and outlet are center or offset. The old muffler had an offset inlet and center outlet. The Magnaflow I ordered had both offset. If I'd compared the drawing to the one on the old exhaust, it'd have taken about 30 seconds.
I knew I should check it. But I figured, what are the odds? It's a 2 inch Magnaflow muffler. The name says it. The photo looks like a muffler. The odds caught up with me.
The rework needed a reducer, a hanger adjustment, and half a day of labor. The muffler was $168. The extra work came to $342. The customer's car blocked a lift for two extra days. The catalytic converter wake-up call

Direct-fit usually means the converter matches the factory mounting points. It does not mean it is automatically legal in every state. Some states follow California's stricter emission requirements. If a converter doesn't have the right executive order number from CARB, a smog station can reject it before it's even installed.
I'm not a lawyer, so I can't speak to all fifty states. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is that on Magnaflow's product page for the 93225, the fitment and compliance notes are right there. I didn't read them because the car was due. The customer ended up moving to a state with stricter rules, and in this case, the part wasn't going to work. Return shipping cost me about $40 and a weekend of my own time explaining to the customer what had happened.
That's when I learned the difference between 'direct-fit' and 'this will pass inspection.' They're related, but not the same.
The Denso oxygen sensor and the reviews trap

The tech caught it during the bottom-end mock-up. The crank was not correct for the customer's year. It may have been for an earlier or later generation—I still don't know, because we never opened it. We returned it, paid freight, lost six days. The customer asked if this was a common thing. That was the moment I realized I needed more than good intentions.
A lesson learned the hard way.
The checklist that fixed it
After the Banshee mess, I built a pre-order checklist. It's not complex. It just makes me slow down before any part goes into a cart.
- Get the OEM part number from the old part, the VIN, or the manufacturer's catalog. Do not rely on a model name alone.
- Check the physical specs: inlet and outlet position, pipe diameter, length, sensor connector, wiring colors, thread pitch. If the product page doesn't show them, ask.
- Read compliance notes. For catalysts, that means checking CARB EO numbers or the manufacturer's fitment notes. For lighting, that means checking whether it's legal for road use in your area.
- Use reviews backward. Look at the one- and two-star reviews before you look at the five-star ones. If the only complaint is 'shipping was slow,' the part is probably fine. If someone says 'fit my car perfectly,' they are describing their car, not yours.
- If a listing has no manufacturer name, no OEM reference, and no dimensional drawing, treat it like a red flag. Find another listing.
Since I started using this checklist in Q3 2024, we've caught 47 potential errors. Some are small, like choosing the wrong offset on a 2 inch Magnaflow muffler. Some are big, like an LED bike headlight that claimed to be universal but was built for a different voltage range. We caught that before it went on a customer's motorcycle, not after.
