The right choice depends on your car, how you use it, and what you're willing to put up with on the road. It also depends on something a lot of buyers skip: where the catalytic converter is located. I've spent ten years in the aftermarket exhaust side of the automotive business, mostly coordinating rush orders for customers who already bought the wrong part. Here's how to avoid that call.

Where Is the Catalytic Converter Located in a Car?

In one sentence: the catalytic converter is located in the exhaust system between the engine and the muffler, usually underneath the car near the front seats. On a transverse four-cylinder, the cat is usually bolted to the downpipe right below the engine. On a longitudinal V8 truck, you'll often see one on each side, ahead of the muffler. On some European cars, cats are built into the exhaust manifold, so you won't see a separate silver box until further downstream. Why does this matter?
