When you recycle an OEM unit, the refiner pulls out more grams of these metals per pound of ceramic substrate. That means a higher payout. A common OEM cat from a late-model truck might bring $150-300 in scrap value. An aftermarket one from the same vehicle? Maybe $50-100.

Aftermarket Units: A Different Equation

Aftermarket cats are built to a price point. To meet the minimum emissions standards (and to survive a class-action lawsuit), they use less precious metal. Some are 'universal' fit, meaning the can is one-size-fits-all. The result is a unit that works, but isn't as rich in recoverable materials.

So, what's the better choice? It depends entirely on what you're trying to do. Let's look at two common scenarios.

Scenario A: You're buying a replacement to install.

If you are a shop installing a new cat, the 'cost' really has two parts: the purchase price and the future scrap value of the old unit. A high-end aftermarket cat might cost $300 to buy and give you $80 in scrap. An OEM equivalent might cost $800 to buy but give you $300 in scrap. The net cost difference is smaller than the upfront sticker shock suggests.

Scenario B: You're a buyer focusing purely on scrap recycling.

If you are buying cores to ship to a processor, the choice is clear. OEM units are the jackpot. But you have to accept the compliance risk and higher purchase price. Aftermarket units are volume business—you buy them cheap, you process them in bulk, and you make money on the margin. They are predictable.

People think expensive cores deliver better margins. Actually, the causation runs the other way: cores with better metal content can be priced higher. You can't fake the chemistry.

Bottom Line: Know Your Lane

The best approach? Be honest about what you specialize in. If you have a steady pipeline of OEM cores from a trusted dealer network, lean into that. If you're buying random take-offs, be realistic about the mix.
