Magnaflow 14-Inch Muffler, ETS Intercooler Evo X, Flywheel Resurfacing & Ball Joint Replacement: A Buyer's Checklist

A practical parts-buying checklist for replacing a ball joint, resurfacing a flywheel, choosing a Magnaflow 18146 muffler, and fitting an ETS intercooler on an Evo X.

If you are the person who actually orders the parts—not just the one who writes the work order—you know how quickly a small exhaust or suspension question becomes a parts puzzle. I manage purchasing for a 30-person automotive shop. Roughly $120,000 a year goes through my desk across eight or nine vendors, and the questions that take the most phone calls are the ones this checklist covers. This checklist has four main steps. The extra notes at the end cover the mistakes that usually come back on the next invoice.

1. Why Would You Replace a Ball Joint on a Vehicle? Look for Play, Not Age

A ball joint has a steel stud that swivels inside a socket. Once that socket wears, the control arm moves around, and every bump gets transmitted as a clunk. You replace a ball joint when there is play beyond the manufacturer's spec, when the dust boot is torn, or when the joint has become noisy. You do not replace one just because the odometer says it is time.

  • Raise the vehicle and support the lower control arm so the suspension is loaded. Then rock the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and feel for movement at the joint.
  • Look for a split boot or for rust-colored dust around the stud. That dust usually means the grease has washed out and grit has gotten in.
  • Pry the lower control arm up and down at the ball joint and compare the movement to the other side. If one side moves and the other does not, replace it.
  • Check the tie rod ends and control arm bushings while you are there. A loose bushing can feel exactly like a worn ball joint.

The numbers said buy the $32 rebuilt ball joint and save $46 per side. My gut said the boot looked thin and the grease fitting was in a bad spot. I went with the OEM part instead. A few weeks later, the technician installing it confirmed the rebuilt unit would have aimed the fitting straight at the sway bar. Use the factory service manual procedure and check for play with the joint loaded, not just with the wheel hanging in the air.

2. Could You Resurface a Flywheel? Only If It Has Enough Material Left

Resurfacing a flywheel is a machining operation that cleans up a friction surface. It is not the same as polishing. What I mean is you remove a controlled amount of material to get rid of heat cracks and scoring while keeping the surface flat. It makes sense when the flywheel has visible hot spots, a glazed surface, or light scoring. It does not make sense if you would cut below the minimum thickness or if the flywheel is cracked.

  • Measure thickness in at least three places. Compare with the minimum thickness stamped on the flywheel or listed in the service manual.
  • Check step height before resurfacing any stepped flywheel. This matters on BMW, Mercedes, and some Japanese cars. If you skim the face without checking the step, the pressure plate sits in the wrong position and the clutch will not release cleanly.
  • Be careful with dual-mass flywheels. Many are not designed to be resurfaced at all.
  • Order new flywheel bolts if the engine uses torque-to-yield bolts. Reusing them can lead to a broken bolt and a very expensive tow.

Looking back, I should have verified the step height before ordering a clutch kit for a customer's car. At the time, the part number lookup seemed right. The machine shop caught the mismatch before assembly, but we still lost a week waiting for the correct flywheel. That one delay turned a routine clutch job into an expedited-shipping nightmare.

3. Magnaflow Performance Exhaust Muffler 18146: How to Spec a Magnaflow 14 Inch Muffler

The Magnaflow performance exhaust muffler 18146 is one of those parts customers ask for by number. It is a 14-inch round muffler with a straight-through core and stainless steel construction. It gives a deep tone without the raspy sound you get from a chambered muffler. Quality matters here because the muffler is one of the first things a customer sees under the car. A clean stainless case and even welds make the whole install look better. But the part number alone is not enough to order from.

  • Confirm inlet and outlet location. Magnaflow makes several 14-inch bodies with different inlet and outlet positions. You need the configuration that lines up with the existing exhaust path.
  • Match the pipe size to the rest of the system. If the existing exhaust is 2.25 inch, do not jump to a 3 inch pipe just for sound. A mismatch creates clearance problems and often makes highway drone worse.
  • Measure the full package length, not just the case. A 14 inch muffler has inlet and outlet connections that make the total length longer. Hangers and rear crossmembers can eat into that space.
  • Use Magnaflow's current spec sheet before ordering. Their site lists dimensions and application notes for the 18146. As of early 2025, the published spec sheet still shows a 14-inch case with welded stainless construction. Verify current availability before quoting a customer.

Oh, and a muffler upgrade only changes noise and flow after the catalytic converter. It will not fix a leaking flex pipe or a tired converter. I should add that because customers often expect the Magnaflow muffler to solve everything loud and everything with low power.

4. ETS Intercooler Evo X: What to Confirm Before You Buy

An ETS intercooler is a common upgrade for an Evo X. According to ETS's published fitment notes, the intercooler fits 2008-2015 Lancer Evolution X and is listed as direct fit. That direct fit statement is mostly true, but there are still a few things to confirm before you spend the money.

  • Decide whether you need a core-only purchase or the full kit with piping, couplers, and clamps. The bare core uses the stock pipe routing and may require extra clamps you do not have on the shelf.
  • Check clearance around the A/C condenser and radiator. A thicker core can sit closer to the condenser and force the cooling fans to rub.
  • Verify whether the crash bar or lower shroud needs trimming. Some intercooler cores require minor trimming of plastic shrouds; not every car is identical.
  • Plan for tuning if you are also raising boost. The intercooler alone does not require a tune, but if the Evo is already tuned on the stock intercooler, a bigger core can change intake air temps enough that you want the tuner to be involved.

I had a gut-versus-data moment with this. The spreadsheet said a generic 3.5-inch core would fit because the dimensions appeared workable. My gut said the A/C lines were too close. We installed it and had to rotate the lines, make a small bracket, and rework one fitting. Or rather, we turned a two-hour job into a five-hour job. The ETS kit would have been easier from the start.

Common Mistakes That Show Up on the Next Invoice

  • Replacing only one ball joint. If the other side has the same mileage and the same wear pattern, do both while the alignment is already on the rack.
  • Resurfacing a flywheel without replacing the pilot bearing. You will hear the chatter about 20,000 miles later.
  • Choosing a Magnaflow 14 inch muffler by sound clips alone. Sound clips are recorded on cars with different exhaust lengths. The 18146 is moderate, but moderate in an open parking lot can be loud in a concrete garage.
  • Skipping the harness check on an Evo X. The fan wiring can rub against a thicker intercooler core and start shorting if the loom is not zip-tied out of the way.

I still kick myself for not taking photos of a ball joint before we removed it. The replacement joint had a grease fitting that aimed right at the sway bar, and the technician had to rotate it. A single photo would have saved 30 minutes. If I could redo that decision, I would document every old part before disassembly. But given what I knew then, my choice was reasonable. That is exactly why the checklist now includes a simple step: take the photo first.
