I'm not a mechanic. I'm the office administrator for an independent repair shop, and I handle parts purchasing. I report to operations and finance, so my job is making sure the invoice and the physical part actually match. But in the real world, the more important value is diagnostic. The old converter tells you whether an engine is running properly or doing something harmful. A damaged cylinder head, a bad alternator, even a tune-up that's years overdue can turn a converter into an expensive pile of scrap. A part number is only as useful as the measurement, the diagnosis, and the legal check that comes with it.

I made the price-only mistake once. I'd rather spend ten minutes checking specs and talking through engine repair first than schedule the same P0420 appointment twice. That's my position after five years of purchase orders. An educated customer, and an educated parts buyer, makes better decisions. I'm sticking to it.
